Can Antidepressants cause Suicide instead of Preventing it?

Drugs taken as antidepressants such as Prozac, Luvox and Paxil are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, more commonly known as SSRI's. One of the brain's most important biochemicals is serotonin, controlling a person's appetite to their mood swings. Some good clues to look for if a person is lacking seratonin are depression, compulsive eating or gambling, moodiness or not sleeping properly. However, too much of a good thing is bad, and can raise seratonin levels too high and can make the brain react in ways similar to mental illness.(Dani Veracity, www.naturalhealth.com, 10/10/2009)

  1. I know several people who have taken anti-depressants, myself one of them, without negative results. Conversely, the results were life saving and changing for me. For many years I was clinically depressed and took Prozac. The prescription drug along with counseling, faith and learning self help tools gave me the foundation to begin my own healing. Today I am medication free and depression no longer rules my life.

  2. I worked on foster care for 10 years and saw alot of kids on antideppressants over the years. I once asked the doctor if there was a link between antideppressants and suicide. He responded by asking me "Why do you think they are taking antideppressants? If they were't deppressed and didn't have those thoughts would they be on the medication?" He also said that the study is somewhat misleading which I agree with him. How can you say it is the medications fault when they already think that way?

  3. I agree with both of you, some medicines are taken by trial and error. What may work for some may not work for others. In doing a little research we have found many things contribute to suicidal thoughts, not just medications alone. If you take medications that were not prescribed to you, and you are taking them without being under a physician's supervision it is hard to manage the individuals taking these drugs without knowing the effects.

  4. I have been on antidepressants for almost a year now. I was first on Zoloft for depression and anxiety and had to stop taking the medication after the first month because it drastically made my symptoms worse. I had no will power to get out of bed. I have now been on Prozac for nine months now and have three more to go. I have had no bad side effects and have a much stronger will power. Yes i believe that antidepressants can cause suicide, but i also believe there is a drug out there for anyone

  5. Anonymous you are right, each individual reacts differently to a drug, and its important that the person who is taking the drug realizes the side effects and if the drug is improving their behavior or making it worse, so that they may go to their doctor and tell them their reaction. The doctor can change the prescription to something that is more beneficial to the patient

  6. yes, medications can cause suicide. sometimes it takes a while for all antidepressants to work and patients expects to be relieved as soon as they take a particular drug. this can lead to thoughts of easy fix which is suicide. they are just tired of dealing with the pain or whatever it is that is bothering them. this is a big problem today, especially in the older population.

  7. It's good that you are informing about side effects. If I ever encounter someone on these types of drugs, I might suspect these signs of side effects.

  8. Some antidepressants do cause suicidal ideations. It is important that nurses inform patients of the side effects of meds and to encourage them to report these side effects to prevent noncompliance, discomfort, and death.
